How to Boost Website Traffic: A Case Study

How Writing 2 Blogs and a Pop-up Window Matter

(The client: an agency renting Croatian luxury villas on the Adriatic)

I’d like to share a remarkable insight with you.

Follow me as I analyse the findings on Google Search Console for a Croatian agency running villa rentals on the beautiful Adriatic coast.

In just a few months (2 months, to be precise), strategic changes led to an impressive increase in website clicks for the client, despite a decline in impressions.

I managed to boost website traffic even when the web pages weren’t shown that frequently on search results pages.

This intriguing outcome highlights the importance of focusing not just on attracting website visitors, but also on engaging them effectively.

So, it’s not enough to have visitors come to your site, but also achieve that they stay longer (dwell time) there or even visit other web pages.

Understanding the Challenge: Driving More Website Visitors in Low Season

The agency faced a common dilemma: they were getting plenty of impressions befor they engaged me for copy and SEO, with numbers reaching up to 35,000 views, yet the click-through rate was disappointing.

This was mostly because the agency’s business involved renting villas, and at the time when I was asked to help, it was low season (we started working from October 2024).

As you can see in the picture below, taken from Google Search Console, in the month of November, the site had only 104 clicks.

The challenge was clear: how to turn impressions into actions, how to boost website traffic and get more clicks when searchers see the client’s website in the SERPS (search engine results pages) for a particular keyword.

I’ve included these 2 months (November and December 2024), because it was then when we deliberately decided to write blog posts.

That is, I SEO optimised blog content - one in November, and the second in December, just ahead of NY.

Instead of aiming solely to increase traffic numbers, we focused on content creation and user engagement.

This experience provides valuable lessons for online businesses needing to convert passive impressions into active click-throughs.

Key Discoveries to Boost Website Traffic: The Power of Content Creation

One of the most significant changes made was the introduction of blog posts.

Before implementation, the agency had only one blog post (there was more than 6 months between their old blog post and my blog post).

However, once I began writing and publishing engaging content in November, the results began to surface.

By December, the click count soared to 146 (increase of 40%)—a marked improvement despite this period seeing lower total impressions.

In the video below, I’m showing you the graph in Google Search Console for the client and you can hear me analyse how by writing blog posts and inserting a pop-up window, you can boost website traffic and get more clicks to your website.

(Visit my video section on SEO and copy to learn how you can rank No. 1 on Google.)

This change demonstrates that quality content can effectively captivate the attention of website visitors.

As the number of clicks rose, the content started driving meaningful interactions.

It became apparent that it wasn't just about bringing users to the site—it was about offering them something of real value.

Boost Website Traffic Ahead of New Year 2025

Just ahead of New Year, we also decided to include a pop-up window (a trend we noticed among travel agencies) to put the client’s offer more in front of the eyes of website visitors.

I know pop-ups can be a real pain in the ass, something that web visitors don’t like to see at the point of visiting the website for the first time.

We really took care not to activate this window too soon. We let visitors enjoy the content, especially the hero section content, and just after that, we activated the pop-up windows.

What are the Strategies to Boost Website Traffic? (3 Strategies)

  1. Create Quality Blog Content

  2. Implement Engagement Tools

  3. Analyse your Audience

1. Create Quality Blog Content

Instead of merely adding more pages to increase page views, businesses should craft quality blog content that answer customer questions, solve problems, or share unique insights. This approach draws in users who find real value in the material presented.

2. Implement Engagement Tools

Adding pop-up windows (see above) or call-to-action buttons to blog posts can significantly enhance user interaction.

For the Croatian villa renting agency, we introduced a pop-up window prior to New Year 2025, effectively encouraging visitors to check availability and book accommodations. This practical tool led to tangible results.

3. Analyse Your Audience

Understanding your audience is crucial. This means not only attracting clicks, but also retaining users on the site for longer durations. It’s essential to monitor how long visitors linger on pages and what content they engage with most. You can use these data to retarget them - use Hotjar for this. It will show which companies visited your web page and you can maybe send them an email asking whether you can help.

So, what lesson can we draw from this case study?

How to Boost Website Traffic -Practical Action Steps

  • produce SEO optimised blog content with a keyword you’re competitive to cover

  • offer downloadable material for free  (I leave it up to you if you want to collect email addresses from potential clients)

  • install Hotjar to see how users interact with the sections on your website (remove those which website visitors tend to skip or don’t see)

  • monitor analytics every week (use Google Search Console and GA4)
